Print

Subject to the Treasury Board funding approval, the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (FBCL) plans to proceed with the "North Channel Bridge Replacement and Corridor Improvements" project at the Three Nations Bridge Crossing (the Seaway International Bridge).

North Channel Bridge Replacement:

The harmonized environmental assessment for the North Channel Bridge Replacement between Cornwall, Ontario and Cornwall Island, Ontario was completed in January 2006.  The North Channel Bridge Replacement generally consists in the construction of a new low-level bridge, the construction of a new canal bridge, the removal of the existing high-level bridge structure and the re-construction of approach roadways.

Corridor Improvements:

FBCL is currently involving many different stakeholders in the conceptual planning and preliminary design of the Corridor Improvements on Cornwall Island, Ontario.  The conceptual planning and preliminary design of the Corridor Improvements are consistent with the Three Nations Bridge Corridor Community Strategy/Master Plan (commissioned by Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, MCA) and U.S./Canada Bi-National Study (commissioned by New York State Department of Transportation).  A harmonized environmental assessment for the Corridor Improvements will also be carried out.  The full scope of the Corridor Improvements will be subject to an agreement in principle between FBCL and MCA.  The agreement will address Cornwall Island community issues and increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the Three Nations Bridge Crossing.

The Corridor Improvements generally consist of

  • Widening of International Road (main roadway)
  • Construction of access roads to adjacent properties
  • Relocation of the Seaway International Bridge Corporation Ltd. (SIBC) toll plaza to south of Cornwall Island Road
  • Construction of new SIBC administration and maintenance buildings
  • Construction of new Canada Border Services Agency commercial building and warehouse
  • Construction of a new waste water treatment plant
