New Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) facilities at the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge
The Federal Bridge Corporation Limited is responsible to provide new Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) facilities at the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge, which links the cities of Sault Ste. Marie Ontario and Michigan.

CBSA facilities must be replaced as the buildings are undersized and overcrowded and health and safety issues have been identified. In addition, the commercial and passenger vehicles are experiencing long delays and congestion.

The project will take approximately five years at an estimated cost of $49M, $44M of which is coming from the Gateways and Border Crossings Fund through a contribution agreement with Transport Canada and $5M through a credit facility with a major bank.

The first step was the selection of a lead consultant to initiate full design services. Properties were then acquired on Queen Street and demolition followed.

During 2009-10, FBCL began acquiring and demolishing properties on Queen Street. Temporary CBSA facilities were built and some existing CBSA buildings were demolished.

Design plans for the Sault Ste. Marie customs plaza rehabilitation project are progressing well and FBCL continues to place every effort in securing key land acquisitions prior to the start of construction works.

FBCL is currently working with its subsidiary St. Mary's River Bridge Company (SMRBC) to complete the project design and acquire lands required for the realization of this project (December 2011).
