OTTAWA, November 30, 2018 /CNW/ – The Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (FBCL) is pleased to announce the awarding of a contract to demolish the original high-level North Channel Bridge in-water piers, between the City of Cornwall and Cornwall Island.
Bronte Construction was successful in winning the contract through a competitive bidding process. FBCL funded the contract, valued at over $5 million. Micheline Dubé, FBCL’s President and CEO, stated that, “FBCL has never wavered in its commitment to complete the demolition, but funding concerns identified early in the construction phases of the new bridge meant we had to fund the project out of internal funding sources.”
In addition to having the most competitive bid, Bronte Construction was able to meet a key requirement of the contract, which was to have a minimum 15% content of the overall value come from resources within the local Mohawk community. This reflects our commitment to working with our bridge host communities.
It is anticipated that the demolition of the three remaining in-water piers will be completed in 2020. For environmental reasons (such as fish-spawning, river habitat and pollution control), the in-water piers cannot be completely removed, but will be reduced to a height of approximately two metres above water level.
